Antarctica by Pat and Rosemarie Keough

Signed Limited Edition, 2002, 256 of 950

Signed by Pat and Rosemarie Keough and Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan.

FINE Condition

This is a signed limited edition of the award winning "Antarctica” published by Nahanni Productions, Salt Spring Island in 2002 with a limitation of 950 copies this being number 256. From the publisher: “Pat and Rosemarie Keough’s Antarctic photographs comprise one of the most stunning and diverse portfolios to feature the great white continent. Their international award-winning imagery encompasses landscapes, seascapes, ice, snow, wildlife, the hand of man, abstracts and realism. The Keoughs’ compositions are strong and engaging. The images are vivid, tantalizing all senses, evoking the sting of ice crystals on one’s face; the clamour and odour of penguin colonies. One can practically feel the burnished texture of golden breast feathers on an Emperor Penguin, or the sun-scalloped face of an ancient, jade iceberg. Two austral summers were spent exploring and photographing the Antarctic from the windswept polar plateau of the interior to the mountainous coast, and from the off-lying islands to the icy seas and stormy Southern Ocean.”

Though professional photographers have recorded Antarctic scenes since the days of Robert Scott's failed 1910-13 expedition, the Keoughs' book, with 345 plates showing scenes from subantarctic islands to the heart of the continent, stands out for its breadth. The Keoughs and their book have collected 21 awards for photography and craftsmanship including "Nature Photographer of the Year" and "World's Best Photography Book" by the International Photography Awards Committee, the Benjamin Franklin Award, and the gold medal for "Outstanding Book of the Year and Best Book arts Craftsmanship" by the Independent Publisher Book Awards competition.

“Antarctica” is substantial. In its accompanying presentation box, the tome weighs 27.6 lbs and has dimensions of 18.25" x 15" x 3.75". The volume itself is 17.25" x 13.5" x 2.5".  This collection of fine photography was elegantly bound in Canada by hand using skills and techniques that date to the 15th century. The tactile experience of the book is enhanced by luxurious, archival materials. Genuine morocco leather tanned in Scotland clad the heavy, leather covers. This fine goat leather is also specified for the flyleaf joints. The doublures are inlaid with French flocked-velvet, this lovely material also incorporated on the flyleaves. For the sewing, strong Irish linen thread and linen tapes were used. Dutch linen and French velvet clad the presentation box. The images were superbly printed in Canada on thick, acid-free, American paper with light-fast German inks.

The book and clamshell box are in FINE condition with the clamshell box having some minor shading towards the top front. The book has been signed by Pat and Rosemarie Keough and Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan on the limitation page.

Stock photographs of the book and clamshell box as well as some photographs from the book appear in the photo section of the listing.
