Waffenruhe (CeaseFire) by Michael Schmidt

First Edition, First Printing, 1987

This is a rare first edition, first printing of Michael Schmidt’s critically acclaimed “Waffenruhe” (CeaseFire) published by Dirk Nischen Verlag, Berlin, in 1987. The book with German text is a striking photo-essay that documents West Berlin in the years just before the fall of the Berlin Wall and contains 39 full page duotones with one being gate folded. “Waffenruhe” is cited in both Martin Parr & Gerry Badger’s, The Photobook: A History Volume II and Andrew Roth’s, The Open Book. Commenting on the book, the New York Times wrote, “Schmidt "represents what is most promising about the New European photography. Working in a style that is impressionistic and seemingly casual, he fashions images that are simultaneously personal and political". Martin Parr sums it up best when he writes, “, "through Schmidt's dramatic perspective and keen eye for telling details and subtle nuances, he creates an air of inconsolable emptiness in his images of The Wall and those affected by it. These photographs will leave you speechless."

Measuring approximately 11.5” x 12.5”, the book is bound in photographically illustrated wrappers. The condition of the book is Near Fine+ in Near Fine+ wrappers with some soiling and shelf wear.

Photographs of the front cover and several photographs contained in the book appear below. Please note that although the photographs appear digitized as thumbnails, they are viewable in the photo viewer by running your mouse over the thumbnail. You can also click on the thumbnail to open a separate window where the picture is viewable.

Franklin Books Guide to Condition Descriptions

We realize that buying books online is difficult because you don't have the luxury of actually seeing the book before you make your decision. At Franklin Books, we strive to make your purchases as risk-free as possible. We follow four basic rules:

  1. We grade our books conservatively;
  2. We describe our books as extensively and accurately as possible;
  3. We pack our books tightly and securely for shipping.
  4. If you feel a book does not match our description, it is returnable for a full refund.

The following are the terms used to describe our books:

Mint - As New: The book is in the same immaculate condition as when it was published and most likely will be in the original publisher's shipping box or shrink wrap.

Fine: Normally, our highest rating. A Fine book approaches the condition of As New. Any superficial/minor fault will always be noted.

Near Fine: A book approaching FINE with minor defects which will always be noted.

Very Good: A book that shows some signs of wear on either the binding or paper. The defects will always be noted.

Good: Describes the average used worn book that has all pages or leaves present. All defects will be noted. We rarely ever list a book in Good condition unless it is of sufficient rarity to be the best available on the market.

Fair/Poor: Describes a book that has major flaws. This copy may be soiled, scuffed, stained or spotted and may have loose joints, hinges or pages. We do not sell books that are in Fair/Poor condition.

If you ever have any questions about the condition of a book, we strongly encourage you to call or email us and we will be happy to pull the book and provide you with any information you need to make an intelligent decision on your purchase.
