William Eggleston’s Guide by William Eggleston
First Edition, First Printing, 1976
Fine Condition
This is a first edition, first printing of the Eggleston’s classic photobook “William Eggleston’s Guide” published by The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1970. William Eggleston's Guide was the first one-man show of color photographs presented at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Museum's first publication of color photography. Parr & Badger in their book, “The Photobook: A History” write, “"One of the seminal photobooks marking the beginning of another type of stream-of-consciousness photography and the birth of color photography, or more accurately, the moment when it was perceived as artistically respectable"…”Eggleston's pictures are at once modest and monumental, vulgar and refined, ordinary and strange, prosaic and poetic, commonplace and unforgettable”.
Containing 49 single page color photographs as well as one black-and-white photograph of Eggleston, the book measures approximately 9” x 9” and is bound in black leatherette with titles stamped in gold gilt with a color photograph of a tricycle affixed. The book is in FINE condition with a few very superficial hairline scratches to the front panel.
Cited in all three reference works on photobooks: “The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century” by Andrew Roth, “The Photobook: A History”, by Parr and Badger, and “The Open Book” by Andrew Roth.
