Mint Condition – Still in Publisher’s Shrink Wrap
This is a signed edition of one of the greatest photobooks ever produced “Farewell Photography / Bye, Bye photography, Dear (Shashin yo Sayonara)” published by PowerShovel, Ltd, Tokyo in 2006. Originally published in 2006 in a smaller format, “Shashin yo Sayonara” is unarguably Daido Moriyama's best book and a high point of the Provoke period. From the publisher, “"A revised reprint of Moriyama's original and now highly sought after classic publication of 1972. Inspired by William Klein's blurred photos of New York street life, Andy Warhol's silk-screened productions and Jack Kerouac's free-spirited travel writing, Moriyama developed a new and radical approach to producing images. These broken, rough and blurred black and white photographs paved the way for what would become his future trademark style. No prints or negatives exist for the material represented in the original Farewell Photography, so this reprint was produced using a copy of the original book as source material. Larger than the original (and with no text whatsoever), this version emphasizes even more strongly Moriyama's frenetic, dynamic approach to image making. And the choice to reprint reprinted material (because, after all, the original book was still a reprint of the photographs themselves) raises interesting critical issues. The aesthetic decisions involved reflect on both photography's development as a medium and the recent interest in the history of photography books - spurred in no small part by the Photobook history by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger. More than simply a reprint of a classic of Japanese photography, this is a reinterpretation."
Measuring approximately 11.5” x 9” and containing 135 full-bleed black and white plates printed as 2-page spreads, the book is bound in black laminated stiff wrappers with Japanese title printed in white on cover and the English title printed in gray on white laminated dust jacket with French folds. The book is housed in a clear acetate slipcase with Japanese title printed in black on cover The condition of the book, dust jacket and slipcase is MINT. This is a fantastic opportunity to obtain a signed edition of one of the most sought after titles in the photobook genre at a fraction of the cost of the original.
Cited in all three major photobook reference works: “The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century” and “The Open Book” by Andrew Roth and “The Photobook: A History” by Parr & Badger.
