This is a signed edition of the critically acclaimed photobook, “Carnival Strippers” published by Steidl, Germany & The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York in 2003. Originally published in 1976 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, New York, this beautifully produced new edition of Susan Meiselas' landmark first book now includes additional photographs along with an audio CD with a collage of voices from its many participants and a 1977 interview with the photographer. From the publisher, "From 1972 to 1975, Susan Meiselas spent her summers photographing and interviewing women who performed striptease for small town carnivals in New England, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina. As she followed the girl shows from town to town, she portrayed the dancers on stage and off, photographing their public performances as well as their private lives. She also taped interviews with the dancers, their boyfriends, the show managers, and paying customers. Meiselas's frank description of the lives of these women brought a hidden world to public attention. Produced during the early years of the women's movement, Carnival Strippers reflects the struggle for identity and self-esteem that characterized a complex era of change. This revised edition contains a new selection of Meiselas's black and white photographs together with the original interview excerpts. Essays by Sylvia Wolf and Deirdre English reflect on the importance of this body of work within the history of photography and the history of feminism.”
Measuring approximately 11.5” x 9” and containing 78 tritone plates, the book is bound in black cloth board with a photographically illustrated dust jacket. The book, dust jacket and CD are in MINT condition. The book is protected with a mylar cover.
The book has been signed and dated by Susan Meiselas on the title page.
