Bye, Bye Photography, Dear (Shashin yo Sayonara) by Daido Moriyama
First Edition, First Printing, 1972
Signed by Daido Moriyama
Exceptional Condition with Original Glassine Cover
This is a very rare signed first edition, first printing of Moriyama’s masterpiece “Bye, Bye Photography, Dear (Shashin yo Sayonara)” published by Shashin Hyoronsha, Tokyo in 1972, “Shashin yo Sayonara” is unarguably Daido Moriyama's best book and a high point of the Provoke period. In the reference work, “The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century”, David Lee Strauss writes, “Bye, Bye Photography, Dear” pushed photographic intentionality to its breaking point. In an extreme act of dissociation and disorientation, the image is scattered to the four winds: lovers’ skin, white legs walking away, a flash of light in a stone corner, an eyelash, a dog, a landscape….But the eye (and the eye is a part of the mind), recollects the shards. Is there to be found anywhere else in the history of photographic bookmaking such a raw cry as this?”
Measuring approximately 9.5” x 7.5”, the book is bound in stiff printed wrappers with a printed dust jacket covered with the original glassine. A mylar cover has been added to protect the dust jacket and glassine. Included with the book is the laid-in ephemera, as issued. I have classified the condition of the book as FINE- with only the slightest of rubbing to the bottom extremities of the black soft cover wrap. The original bookseller sticker is affixed to the back inside wrap.
The book has been boldly signed by Daido Moriyama in both English and kanji on the title page. This is a fantastic opportunity to obtain a signed first edition of one of the most sought after titles in the photobook genre that is rarely found in such fantastic condition.
Cited in all three major photobook reference works: “The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century” and “The Open Book” by Andrew Roth and “The Photobook: A History” by Parr & Badger.
Numerous photographs of the book from various angles, the signature page, ephemera and examples of photographs contained in the book appear below. Please note that although the photographs appear digitized as thumbnails, they are viewable in the photo viewer by clicking your mouse on the thumbnail.
