This is a very scarce signed, limited edition of “Mario Giacomelli” published by Friends of Photography, Carmel in1983 with a limitation of 20 signed and numbered copies this being number 2. Mario Giacomelli is widely regarded as the greatest Italian photographer of the twentieth century. This book contains 40 spectacular tritone plates from his Paesaggio (landscapes) series and a selection from his well known work with people in Italy including the famous Scanno series and Pretini. Giacomelli's landscape work is particularly noteworthy. Commenting on his landscape series, he wrote: "to look at these images...is to feel the surface texture of plants, to know the labour of the land, the sounds of celebration, the games outside the church, old sun-drenched walls, friendship and human company, quiet relaxation, the events, the ceremonial and religious life, the pride and vitality that are the visible phenomena of society." The photographs depict an almost idealistic fantasy of how we today imagine the Italian village to look. The prints themselves display Giacomelli's characteristic use of strong contrast and striking use of form and texture.
Measuring approximately 11.5” x 9.5”, the book is bound in linen covered boards (issued without a dust jacket) and has a photograph pasted on the front cover. The book is in Mint condition.
The book has been signed and numbered (2 of 20) by Mario Giacomelli on the title page. This is an incredible opportunity to obtain an extremely scarce photobook by one of the most original photographic artists of the twentieth-century.
