![]() Harry Callahan: Color 1941 - 1980 First Edition, First Printing, 1980 Signed by Harry Callahan Fine Condition This is a signed first edition, first printing of “Harry Callahan: Color 1941 - 1980” published by Matrix Publications, Providence, Rhode Island, in 1980. Harry Callahan took serious color photographs throughout his long career, beginning in his home city of Detroit in 1941, but his interest in the medium increased following his retirement from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1980. Images in this book were taken in Chicago, New York, Providence, Boston, Cape Cod, Venice, Ireland, Aix-en-Provence, Cairo, and a few other locales. The subjects are familiar Callahan imagery--cityscapes, beach scenes, and his wife Eleanor in the nude. Andy Grundberg in his 1999 NY Times obituary for Callahan wrote, “[Callahan's] obsessive interest in light, line and space and their interplay drove him to photograph one subject at a time exhaustively. 'I experiment with various techniques.' he once explained, 'to help me see things differently from the way I saw them before. That is seeing photographically, and when you see photographically you really see.'" Measuring approximately 14” x 14” and containing 106 spectacular color photographs, the book is bound in grey cloth covered boards (issued without a dust jacket) housed in a matching slipcase with a photograph pasted on the front of the slipcase. The book and slipcase are in FINE condition and do not have the typical fading that is endemic to this title. The book has been signed by Harry Callahan on the title page. Photographs of the slipcase, signature page, as well as images contained in the book appear below. Please note that although the photographs appear digitized as thumbnails, they are viewable in the photo viewer by running your mouse over the thumbnail. You can also click on the thumbnail to open a separate window where the picture is viewable.
