Sam Shepard won the Pulitzer Prize in 1979 for his play Buried Child. In 1986 A Lie of the Mind was named best new play of the season by the New York Drama Critics Circle, and that year Shepard was admitted to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. For all his acclaim as a playwright, Sam Shepard may be more widely known for his roles as an actor in films. A Lie of the Mind has been described by the drama critic Frank Rich as "a variously rending and hilarious reverie about parents and sons and husbands and wives, all blending into a mythic wilderness." Stan Washburn is a noted Bay Area artist who was accorded an exhibition of his prints at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor. He is represented by the North Point Gallery in San Francisco.
Format: 13 by 10 inches, 144 pages. The types are Monotype Ehrhardt, handset Janson, and handset De Vinne wood type. The scratch-board drawings are printed from photopolymer plates. The paper is French mouldmade Lana Royale. The binding has a blue goatskin spine with title stamping and red paper over boards, silkscreened with titling and a drawing by the artist. Numbered and signed by author and artist. Edition of 300 copies, $400.00.
Included with the book as a premium is a CD recording of music by the Red Clay Ramblers for the play's first production, directed by the playwright.
