In Flagrante by Chris Killip
First Edition, First Printing, 1988
This is a rare first edition, first printing of Chris Killip’s highly acclaimed photobook “In Flagrante” published by Secker & Warburg, London in 1988. “In Flagrante” is often cited as the most important photobook to come from England in the 1980s. According to Gerry Badger: "In Flagrante is a dark, pessimistic journey, perhaps even a secret odyssey, where rigorous documentary is suffused with a contemplative inwardness, a rare quality in modern photography..." And according to the New York Times: "Killip's compelling images of life for many British during the Thatcher years puts him at the forefront of photographers who "represent new and promising directions." From the publisher, “"In Flagrante is a book of fifty photographs by one of Europe's most outstanding and uncompromising photographers. The impact of these images is both immediate and enduring, creating one of the most authoritative and intense bodies of work produced this decade. This view of Britain in the eighties reflects the stark reality of industrial society in decline. The essay which follows the photographs is the result of a unique and remarkable collaboration between John Berger and Sylvia Grant."
Measuring 12” x 9.5” and containing 50 full and double page gritty black and white photographs, the book is bound in photographically illustrated wrappers. The book is in Near FINE+ condition with light age toning and slight wear and scuffing to the wraps. Overall, this is a highly collectible copy of a highly acclaimed photobook.
In 1989, Chris Killip was chosen as the first recipient of the prestigious Henri Cartier-Bresson Award.
