Andy Warhol’s Index (Book)

Stated First Edition, 1967

Includes All 10 Multiples

This is a rare stated first edition of Andy Warhol’s classic artist book “Index” published by the Random House, NY in 1967.  The book is a compilation of interviews, art inserts, pop-ups, photographs, recording discs, and descriptions of life at the Factory. Designed as a children’s book for grown up hipsters, “Index” is an important Warhol document and an absolutely iconic publication of the psychedelic era in New York. The photographs are by Billy Name and other Warhol co-conspirators with the assistance of Stephen Shore, Paul Morrissey, Ondine, and Nico.

All 10 multiples are present and are as follows: pop-up castle, fold-out accordion, pop-up airplane, Chelsea Girls disc, a paper sculpture attached to the book with string, Lou Reed record, a fold-out sheet with nose and overlays, a pop-up Hunt's Tomato Paste can, a tear-out warm water sheet, and the infamous balloon that is stuck between two pages like every other copy of this book.

The book is bound in illustrated wraps and measures 11” x 8.5”. This is a notoriously fragile book and is prone to condition issues. I have classified the book as Near FINE with some surface wear to the wraps and starting to some of the pages but fully intact. The multiples are in fantastic shape with the exception of the balloon that is stuck between two pages. Overall, this is a highly collectible copy of one of Warhol’s better know works that is rarely found with all the multiples intact.

Cited in “The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century” by Andrew Roth.

Photographs of the illustrated wraps as well as some of the multiples/objects contained in the book appear below. Please note that although the photographs appear digitized as thumbnails, they are viewable in the photo viewer by running your mouse over the thumbnail. You can also click on the thumbnail to open a separate window where the pictures are viewable as a slideshow.
