Children the Year Round (D?reki) by Shoji Ueda

First Edition, First Printing, 1971

This is a rare first edition, first printing of “Children the Year Round (D?reki) by Shoji Ueda” published by Chuo-Koronsha, Tokyo, in 1971 as part of the Eiz? no Gendai (The Present of Images) Series this being title number 3. Ueda is considered by many to be the leading figure of the “Subjective Movement” in post-war Japanese photography that emphasized an alternative to “realism” that dominated pre-war Japanese photography. In her Japanese photography reference work, “The History of Japanese Photography”, Anne Wilkes Tucker wrote, “The subjective, dreamlike quality of Ueda’s work, as well as its subtle humor, went against the grain of the dominant trend toward documentary photography in Japan following the war. In 1971, a solo exhibition at the Pentax Gallery, Tokyo, “Children the Year Round” featured his work in Tottori Prefecture; Ueda depicted the children of the area in the natural environment, in each season of the year.”

Containing 96 black-and-white photographs and measuring approximately 10.5” x 8.5”, the book is bound in white laminated paper covered boards with a printed dust jacket sans obi. The dust jacket is protected with a mylar covering. The condition of the book is FINE. The dust jacket is in Very Good condition with sunning to the front cover and spine with minor wear to the tips and spine edges.

Photographs of the front and back of the dust jacket as well as photographs from the book appear below. Please note that although the photographs appear digitized as thumbnails, they are viewable in the photo viewer by running your mouse over the thumbnail. You can also click on the thumbnail to open a separate window where the pictures are viewable as a slideshow.
