As New Condition

This is a first edition, first printing of “Domestic Vacations” published by Radius Books, Santa Fe in 2008. Julie Blackmon's perfectly composed photographs are a tableaux of family life – the strange moments that seem so ordinary in the course of living with children. These scenes are staged, but present reality-based imaginings with subtle twists of fantasy. From the Publisher: “The Dutch saying, 'a Jan Steen household,' originated in the 17th century and has come to be used to refer to a home in disarray, full of rowdy children and boisterous family gatherings. The paintings of Steen, along with those of other Dutch and Flemish genre painters, are the direct inspiration behind the layered, domestic scenes of Blackmon’s work. Raised as the oldest of nine children, with three herself, Blackmon takes an approach to her work that is at once autobiographical and fictional. Blackmon sees life’s most poignant moments as a fusion of fantasy and reality, the mythic amidst chaos. Anne Wilkes Tucker of the Houston Museum of Fine Art has said of her work, 'she’s taken a subject that is ripe for cliché—mother photographing children— and through the subtle, digital manipulations, the use of color and highly graphic images, she’s given it humor and edge and taken the subject somewhere fresh.'”

Containing 40 color photographs and measuring approximately 11” x 11”, the book is bound in photographically illustrated boards and was issued without a dust jacket. The book is in “As New” condition still in the publisher’s shrink wrap that has been slit open to be signed by Julie Blackmon on the title page.

Photographs of the book cover, signature page, and photographs contained in the book appear below. Please note that although the photographs appear digitized as thumbnails, they are viewable in the photo viewer by clicking your mouse on the thumbnail.
