This is a rare leather bound limited edition of “The Bobby Jones Story” published by The Old Golf Shop, Cincinnati in 1980 with a limitation of 300 copies with this being number 280. Measuring approximately 9” x 5.5”, the book was published to celebrate the golden anniversary of Bobby Jones “Grand Slam” in 1930 and features a gilt decorated cover and spine with a paper illustration bound into the front cover along with numerous vintage photographs. The book is The story of golfer Bobby Jones, who from 1923 to 1930 won thirteen major championships and remains the only player ever to win all four majors in the same year-all before retiring from competitive golf when he was just 28 years old. The author is Grantland Rice who was the editor of American Golfer Magazine for 53 years and is generally credited as the first sportswriter of the modern era to create stars from sports heroes. Among the stars he is credited with highlighting are quite a collection of talent. In addition to Bobby Jones it includes Babe Ruth, Red Grange, Knute Rockne, Jack Dempsey and Bill Tilden. In addition to authoring 14 books and being an accomplished sports writer, Rice is best known for penning two of the best know sports quotes, “It’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game.” and “Golf is twenty per cent mechanics and technique. The other eighty percent is philosophy, humor, tragedy, romance, melodrama, companionship, camaraderie, cussedness and conversation.”
The book is in excellent condition with minimal surface wear and appears to have never been read. There are no bookplates, markings, or any other signs of previous ownership.
