Sinclair Lewis is one of the most highly regarded authors of the twentieth century. In 1930, he became the first writer from the United States to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, “for vigorous and graphic art of description and his ability to create, with wit and humor, new types of characters." His works are known for their insightful and critical views of American society and capitalist values, as well as for their strong characterizations of modern working women. In addition to the Nobel Prize, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1925 for Arrowsmith.
Each book measures approximately 9” x 5.5” and is bound in full leather boards with raised bands on the spine, gold gilding and gilting, and a built in satin bookmark. All four volumes are in FINE condition with minor marks to the gilt. There is a long thing scratch to the top gilt and a rub to the side gilt of Arrowsmith (please see photo below). The books appear to have never been read. There are no bookplates or signs of previous ownership.
Photographs of the spines of the books, an example of the front cover, and the top gilt of Arrowsmith appear below.
