This is a beautiful limited edition recreation of the Gustave Dore illustrated 2 volume edition of History of the Crusades published by the Easton Press with a limitation of 600 hand number copies. The books come with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity but the edition number is unknown as the books are in the original packaging and are still sealed. Michaud was one of the founding fathers of crusader studies; his History of the Crusades has recently been referred to as ‘a major landmark in European crusade historiograpy’ and established a narrative model and a multi-volume format for crusading scholarship that was to be followed by man later writers. Dore created the artwork for the publication which perfectly captures the spirit of Michaud’s narrative. As one critic wrote: "The illustrations by Dore capture all the savagery, nobility and vast sweep of the centuries-long conflict – the suite is considered to be among the finest of the pictorial interpretations of the Crusades.
