Gustave Dore Bible Gallery
Featuring 100 Illustrations by Gustave Dore
Henry Altemus, Philadelphia, 1890
Exceptional Condition
This is a remarkably well preserved edition of “Gustave Dore Bible Gallery” published by Henry Altemus, Philadelphia in 1890. Gustave Dore’s illustrations for the Bible are among the most iconic images ever produced. There are literally hundreds of Bible editions that use his artwork. The “Gustave Dore Bible Gallery” contains 100 of the most popular images. These full page engravings are printed on one side of the page. The original intention was for these impressions made from wood and steel engraving would be frameable pieces of art. On the opposite page of each image, is an accompanying poetic text page.
The book measures 12" x 10" x 1.25” with 408 pages and is bound in an elaborate gilt decorated buckram front board and an embossed buckram back board. The spine contains a gilt title and decorative embossments. The page ends are gilted and the endpapers are forest green coated paper.
The book is in exceptional condition. The internals are free from foxing and are unmarked. They have turned a very nice ivory color with age. The covers show some wear to the gilt on the spine with bumps to the corner and to the top and bottom of the spine. I have handled numerous copies of this title and this is by far the nicest copy that I have come across.
Photographs of the book as well as stock photographs of examples of Gustave Dore’s illustrations appear below. Although the thumbnails may appear digitized, you can click your mouse on the thumbnail to view the picture in the photo viewer.
