The Plays of J.M. Barrie in One Volume

Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1935

Signed Binding by Riviere

This is the definitive edition of the plays of J.M. Barrie that contains the most important of his full-length works for the stage and the best of his one act plays. "The Plays of J.M. Barrie in One Volume” was published by Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York in 1935 and was preceded by two earlier editions published in 1914 and 1928. The first play in this book is of course Peter Pan by which the character of Peter Pan was established in the form we think of him today. The titles of the 17 plays in the book are: Peter Pan, Or The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up, Quality Street, The Admirable Crichton, Alice Sit-By-The-Fire, What Every Woman Knows, A Kiss For Cinderella, Dear Brutus, Mary Rose, Pantaloon, Half An Hour, Seven Women, Old Friends, Rosalind, The Will, The Twelve-Pound Look, The New Word, A Well-Remembered Voice, Barbara's Wedding, The Old Lady Shows Her Medals, Shall We Join The Ladies?

Measuring 8” x 5.5” x 1.5” and containing 871 pages with a frontispiece portrait of J.M. Barrie protected by a tissue guard, the book is bound in a signed full leather binding by Riviere and Son with six compartments to the spine with elaborate gilt tooling, double gild rule to the boards, colorful floral endpapers, gilted end pages, and gild dentelles. The stamp of Riviere and Son appears on the bottom border of the first free endpaper. The book is housed in a buckram slipcase.

The condition of the book is Near FINE with a minor rub and soiling to the spine as well as a slight bow to the boards. Internally, the book is very clean with no evidence of foxing. The slipcase is in Very Good+ condition with rubs to the tips and discoloration along the edges.

Photographs of the binding, endpapers, Riviere binding stamp, list of plays, and frontispiece appear below. Please note that although the photographs appear digitized as thumbnails, they are viewable in the photo viewer by clicking the thumbnail.
