First Edition by Leopold Ranke, a German historian who was one of the founders of modern, source-based history. In this work, Ranke, a Protestant, coined the term the “Counter Reformation” and offered colorful portrayals of Pope Paul IV, Ignatius of Loyola and Pope Pius V.
Each book measures 7.25” x 4.75”. Illustrated with three portrait frontispieces engraved by Hinchliffe after Raphael (Julius II), Velasquez (Innocent X) and Titian (Clement VII).
Condition Report
Endpapers foxed but main text clean throughout, frontispieces offset onto title pages, bindings with trivial wear to edges and no further obvious faults, all boards firmly attached with no cracking to joints, a handsome set in Near FINE condition.
