This is a beautifully crafted limited edition of John Dryden’s “All for Love: Anthony and Cleopatra” published by The Allen Press, Kentfield, California in 1976 with a limitation of 140 copies. All for Love is John Dryden’s poetic masterpiece and is a classic play of the seventeenth century about the Mark Anthony and Cleopatra love affair. Anna Cannan in her review for Goodreads wrote, “Although John Dryden the poet is best known for his alexandrine epics, John Dryden the playwright is most honored for this blank verse tragedy. The summit of Dryden's dramatic art, All for Love (1677) is a spectacle of passion as felt, feared, and disputed in the suspicious years following the English Civil War."
Measuring 13” x 8.5”, the book is bound in beige cloth covered boards and is housed in a matching slipcase. The 54 leaves are printed on handmade paper, printed damp in various colors on a Columbian hand press. The book features a full page portrait of Cleopatra hand painted in seven colors and gold on papyrus by artists in Cairo, Egypt. The Egyptian ornaments and scene openings were hand illuminated by Dorothy Allen. The limitation is 140 copies. The prospectus is laid into the book.
The condition of the book is FINE with a few touches of pinpoint foxing which is usual for this title. The slipcase is in Near FINE condition with some minor wear to the corners. Overall, this is a wonderful copy of a beautifully illustrated fine press limited edition.
