Details

The Sonnets of Shakespeare is a beautiful letter press edition that was issued with a limitation of 980 copies with this being number 20. The book is signed on the limitation page by Elbert Hubbard the editor of Roycrofters. Each sonnet is hand illuminated with wonderfully ornate letters at the beginning of each sonnet. Each illumination also includes a beautiful illustration. The book was originally bound in a suede covering over paper boards. Due to material used, very few of these have survived and those that have are usually in very bad shape.

The book measures approximately 8” x 6” and contains 440 pages. Included at the end of the book is an index of first lines for each of the sonnets.

The book has been signed by Elbert Hubbard on the limitation page. (Please see photographs below)

Condition Report

The book is Near FINE+ condition with a strong binding and clean, unmarked text which is free of foxing but has a few finger smudges in the margins on a few pages as well as some shallow creases on some of the pages. The spine has a few very minor rubs and some wear to the tips. Overall, this is a wonderful copy of a title that is rarely seen in such wonderful condition.

Photographs of the books spine and cover as well as the signature treatment and an example of an illuminated page appear below. Although the photographs may appear digitized as thumbnails, you can view them in the photo viewer by clicking on the thumbnail.
