This is a beautiful portfolio of lithographs by Maurice Sendak entitled “Pictures by Maurice Sendak” published by Harper and Row, New York in 1971 with a limitation of 500 this being number 319. The elephant folio (26.5” x 17.25”) brings together a rare collection of 20 plates of various sizes reproducing illustrations used in books illustrated by Maurice Sendak including “Where the Wild Things Are”, “In the Night Kitchen”, Higglety Pigglety Pop!”, as well as several other books. The work contains a signed reproduction of a previously unpublished pencil drawing of Jennie, the Sealyham terrier who posed for the heroine of "Higglety Pigglety Pop!" Included in the portfolio is an accompanying pamphlet written by Maurice Sendak. The 20 lithographs are loose in 9 paper folders, as issued, and come in a beautiful cloth folding case with paper title label on upper cover.
The drawings are in excellent condition with a few of the lithographs having very minor creases on the bottom edge of the white border that do not detract from the lithographic images. Overall, this is an exceptional copy of a wonderful portfolio of lithographs by a remarkable illustrator and author.
