A Tillyloss Scandal by J.M. Barrie
Coryell & Co., 1893
Pirated First Edition
Signed Binding by Bennett
This is the unauthorized American edition of stories and sketches by J.M. Barry, Scottish dramatist and novelist who authored Peter Pan. "A Tillyloss Scandal” was published without Barrie’s permission and was originally issued in fragile paper wraps. The book was reprinted from magazine stories in the Edinburgh Evening Dispatch, the Scots Observer, Good Words, and the British Weekly . Rick Russell in his article “Notes on Book Collecting- James M. Barrie – Pirates: The Pirated Editions of James M. Barrie” wrote, “The American pirated edition is often the centerpiece of a collection. For many years the auction record for a paperback book was held by a book that the author never intended nor acknowledged, A Tillyloss Scandal by James M. Barrie. The lovable and slightly disreputable American pirated edition is often the true first appearance of a book on the left shore of the Atlantic, the true First American edition, and the true First edition.”
Measuring 7” x 5” and containing 207 pages, the book was handsomely rebound in a fine binding of full black leather with five raised spine bands with gilt title, author name and publisher in alternating compartments, leather turn-ins, double ruled in gilt and signed "Bennett. N.Y." The top page edges are gilted.
The condition of the book is Near FINE with very minor wear to the exterior and some age toning to the internals and a couple of creased page corners. The binding is sound and there are no signs of previous ownership.
