Fine contemporary binding signed by H. Sotheran & Co., London of full calf leather with elaborate gilding to the spine, edges, and covers. The front cover has a gilt stamped crest. The inside covers have gilded dentelles and marbled endpapers and the endpapers are gold gilted. The stamp of the binder H. Sotheran & Co. London is stamped in gilt on the bottom inside cover below the prize bookplate.

Westward Ho! was one of the best selling books of the nineteenth century and ranks among Kingsley’s most significant works. The book is an impassioned narrative of high achievement, culminating in the overthrow of the Armada by a band of young adventurers from Devon who sail on a fanciful quest to the Spanish Main.
The book measures 7.5” x 5.25” with 591 pages and contains a frontispiece portrait of Charles Kingsley.
Condition Report
The binding is in FINE condition with the most minimal of surface wear and minor marks to the gilted page ends. Internally the book is very clean with no foxing. Overall, this is beautiful signed leather binding that is in exceptional condition.
