Tulsa by Larry Clark
True First Edition, First Printing, 1971
This is an extremely scarce true first edition, first printing of the critically acclaimed photo book “Tulsa” published by the Lustrum Press, New York in 1971. This edition precedes the hardcover edition by eight years and is the TRUE first edition. When it first appeared in 1971, Larry Clark's groundbreaking book sparked immediate controversy across the nation. Its graphic depictions of sex, violence, and drug abuse in the youth culture of Oklahoma were acclaimed by critics for stripping bare the myth that Middle America had been immune to the social convulsions that rocked America in the 1960s. The raw, haunting images taken in 1963, 1968, and 1971 document a youth culture progressively overwhelmed by self-destruction. “Tulsa” has been selected by numerous critics as one of the most important photography books ever published and was picked by Andrew Roth to be included in his book “Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photography Books of the Twentieth Century.”
Measuring 12” x 9”, the book is unpaginated and bound in black and white pictorial wrappers. The condition is Near Fine+ with light wear to the extremities, a couple of small white marks on the back cover, and a small crescent-shape crease on the front fore edge. The internals are excellent with no markings, bookplates, or signs of previous ownership. Overall, this is a wonderful copy of the true first edition of one of the highpoints of twentieth century photographic publishing.
