This is a signed limited edition of “A Delicate Balance” published by the Arion Press in 2011 with a limitation of 300 with this being number 10. From the publisher, “Edward Albee's Pulitzer Prize-winning play A Delicate Balance reveals the emotional savagery of suburbia and the psychological terror of empty lives. First produced in 1966, this dark drawing room comedy is considered by many to be Albee's masterpiece. Filled with shades of meaning, subtleties, and whole paragraphs of brilliant dialogue, A Delicate Balance has become classic theater, a timeless mirror of the worst, and sometimes the best, aspects of modern life.” Tom Holland has made abstract images of bottles and glasses that appear at the beginnings of the three acts and an abstraction of a house for the cover. These cunning watercolors look like stained glass windows with sunlight shining through. As David Littlejohn writes in his introduction: “Drinking, as Tom Holland’s illustrations suggest, plays a large part in this play—almost as large a part as in Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? I count about twenty-three glasses of hard liquor onstage in A Delicate Balance (plus Agnes’s reference to good wine at dinner).”
The book measures 9.25” x 6.25” with 172 pages. The binding is comprised of a purple goatskin leather spine with the title stamped in silver foil and lavender cloth over the covers with an inset area on the front cover containing one of Tom Holland’s watercolors. The types are Monotype American Garamond and Univers, printed by letterpress on Revere, an Italian mould-made paper.
The book is signed by Edward Albee. Accompanying the book is the original prospectus.
The book is in MINT condition still in the publisher’s original packaging.
A composite stock photographs of the book and one of the illustrations appear in the photo section of the listing.
