In their review of the book, Kirkus wrote, “One's first feeling on closing this book is profound sympathy for a man whose capacities, personality and emotional development had been hemmed in by the strictures of the role for which he was destined. The melodramatic ending of his brief reign was ""tried"" by the public press; here he takes the chance to tell his side of the story. To tell it he feels impelled to put on record the story of a Prince who became a King, who fell in love with a woman who was not accepted by his arbiters, and who gave up the throne he felt he could not fill without her … required reading for anyone interested in the most romantic love story of our time.” (Kirkus UK)
