These three fine leather bindings house the true first edition, first printings of two significant novels, “A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens and “The Woman in White” by Wilkie Collins as published in volumes I,II, and III of All the Year Round, the weekly periodical owned by Charles Dickens. The following is a breakdown of the three volumes:
Volume 1, April 30 1859 to October 22, 1959 - Parts 1-26 includes the opening of A Tale of Two Cities through chapter IX
Volume 2, October 29, 1959 to April 7, 1860 - Parts 27-50 includes A Tale of Two Cities from chapter X to the end of the novel, and then The Woman In White from the start of the novel to the chapter 'Mrs Malcombe's Narrative continued'. Volume 2 also includes 7 short stories by Dickens in the Uncommercial Traveller series plus the Christmas number for 1859, 'The Haunted House', to which Dickens contributed.
Volume 3, April 14 to October 6, 1860 - Parts 51-76 and picks up The Woman In White from where volume 2 leaves off (Mrs Malcombe's Narrative continued) and runs through to the end of the novel. Volume 3 also contains another 9 of Dickens' Uncommercial Traveller series.
Each volume measures approximately 9.5” x 6.5” and is finely bound in three quarter burgundy leather over marbled boards, raised bands, and gilted titling.
The bindings are in FINE condition. Internally, clean and tight with light browning and only very occasional foxing. 3 neat faded stamps in volume 1, one page corner loss in volume 3, otherwise in great condition throughout all 3 volumes. Overall, this is a really important set that includes the true first printings of 2 significant novels as well as 16 Dickens short stories and the Christmas issue co-written by Charles Dickens.
