History: In 2006, fine press photography book publisher 21ST Editions released The Shining Path. Limited to 50 copies worldwide, the hand-bound collection contains 11 original silver gelatin prints (ten bound and one free-standing hand colored silver gelatin print that is suitable for framing). Each print is fully signed by Brigitte Carnochan with the free standing photograph entitled “Purple Grapes” also signed in full on the rectro. This copy, 4 of 50, was presented to Lance Speer (21ST Editions Contributing Editor and Director of Marketing) upon completion of the project.
Details of the Book and Prints: Brigitte Carnochan is one of the most sensual of contemporary photographers and today’s leading master at the hand-coloring of photographs. Her work is blended with an epic poem of love, female beauty, and revolution set in Peru and written by Peruvian/British poet and editor Raúl Peschiera. From the Publisher: “All those who have seen our fine press books can attest to their impeccable craftsmanship, but with The Shining Path we have reached a new level in a binding made to suggest Peruvian fabric, a typographical layout that recalls the Andes Mountains, and even one of Carnochan’s original, painstakingly and fully hand-colored photographs.”
The book features textured boards and the free-standing silver gelatin print is housed in a separate folded, letterpress printed presentation folder. The book and print are contained inside a custom-made clothbound clamshell box. Each of the 11 silver gelatin prints is signed on the border. Measuring 15” x 13.5”, the book is also signed by Bridgitte Carnochan, Paul Peschiere, John Wood, and the publisher, Stephen Albahari. A Letter of Provenance from Lance Speer is included.
The book and prints are in MINT condition still in the publisher’s original wooden shipping case.
Photographs of book, the free standing silver gelatin print, a stock photograph of the wooden shipping case, and several examples of the silver gelatin prints contained in the book appear in the photo section of the listing.
