Nihon no Shashinka (Japanese photographers) is a fine collection of 41 photobooks published between 1997 and 1999 by Iwanami Shoten and edited by Kohtaro Iizawa, Shigeichi Nagano and Naoyuki Kinoshita. It offers, in elegant and well-crafted square hardcover volumes, quite a thorough, well-chosen panorama of the best works of the most important Japanese photographers since the Meiji period. Text is minimal (captions) but each volume entails a foreword by Japan's foremost photography critic Kohtaro Iizawa (déjà-vu) and, depending on the photographer, an afterword, an essay, an interview, a biography, a bibliography. The collection was a huge success, has long been out of print and is now much sought-after by amateurs and collectors.
Please note that the book is written in Japanese.
