History: In 1998, fine press photography book publisher 21st Editions released Blood Migration to commemorate it’s ten year anniversary. Limited to 50 copies worldwide, each of the hand-bound collection contains 19 original prints done in a wide range of classic photographic processes including hand-coated cyanotypes, kallitypes, platinum and palladium prints. 18 of the prints are bound into the book and one is a free-standing platinum print that is suitable for framing. Each print is signed by John Metoyer. The first 12 numbered editions also contain a separate portfolio of 18 signed free-standing prints that appear in the book. Each edition is numbered and signed by the artist, the editor and the publisher. These copies, 4 of 50, were presented to Lance Speer, 21ST Editions Contributing Editor and Director of Marketing, upon completion of the project. The edition sold out shortly after release.
Details of the Books and Prints: John Metoyer’s Blood Migrations brings together the photographs and poetry of one of America’s most gifted contemporary artists. His strange, deeply moving, often terrifying yet beautiful photographs come from a unique, magically real world of his own making, a world that can both comfort and disturb. His poetry has a similar universality about it, and ranges from poems on the African-American experience to what he ironically call’s “love’s post mortem changes.” As John Wood writes in his introduction: “John Metoyer is one of the great photographic geniuses of our time and one of those exceptionally rare artists of the last few centuries who can genuinely be considered a master of more than one art–in his case, photography and poetry….This book celebrates his work in both arts, two arts which for Metoyer are completely separate and have nothing in common but their creator. His photographs do not illustrate his poems nor is his poetry a commentary on his photography. They are merely separate manifestations of a similar genius.”
The book is hand-bound in cloth covers and printed in letterpress on handmade cotton rag paper and housed in a custom clamshell box, The book measures 23” x 17”. The free-standing platinum print is housed in a folded, letterpress printed presentation folder. The book is signed and numbered by John Metoyer, John Wood, and the publisher, Steven Albahari, on the limitation page. The portfolio of 19 signed free-standing prints is housed in a separate custom clamshell box that matches the clamshell box with the book. A Letter of Provenance from Lance Speer is included.
