This is a beautiful limited edition recreation of the original 1872 and 1874 editions of Picturesque America published by the Easton Press with a limitation of 400 hand number copies. The books come with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity but the edition number is unknown as the books are still in the original packaging and sealed. Sue Rainey in her introduction to a book explaining the creation of the original work wrote, “'Picturesque America' was a conspicuous presence in the popular culture of the United States in the post-Civil War years. First published as a magazine series in Appletons' Journal, then as a subscription book, in parts, from 1872 to 1874 it reached a huge audience. Its voluminous text and over 900 pictures represented the first comprehensive celebration of the entire continental nation. By testifying to the variety, uniqueness and potential wealth of the American landscape and the advanced civilization of its cities, 'Picturesque America' laid the foundation for a resurgence of nationalism rooted in the homeland itself, rather than in institutions of democracy as would have been the case earlier in the century."
From the publisher, “A breathtaking re-creation of William Cullen Bryant's fully illustrated 19th century celebration of America ... Originally published in 1872 and 1874, this magnificently oversized two-volume set was intended to celebrate the unifying beauty and spirit of America in response to the division of the Civil War. Today, it offers a unique portrait of our country as it approached its Centennial. Here are images of Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, New York City and much more.
