This is the signed limited edition of “Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror” published by the Arion Press in 1984 with a limitation of 150 with this being number 130. From the publisher, “This most famous poem of one of America's most revered contemporary poets was set in this unusual manner by the typographer as a tribute to Ashbery that could be joined in by his artist-friends whose prints would be united by a circular format. The invited eight created images that respond to the poem and the self-portrait by Parmigianino that inspired Ashbery.”
The Arion Press spared no expense in producing their thirteenth publication. Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror contains a new foreword to the poem by the poet, an essay on the poem by Helen Vendler printed as liner notes on the jacket of a record album of the poet reading the poem, and signed original prints by Richard Avedon, Elaine de Kooning, Willem de Kooning, Jim Dine, Jane Freilicher, Alex Katz, R. B. Kitaj, and Larry Rivers.
The portfolio consists of 40 leaves that are each 18 inches in diameter. The text is handset in Cochin in lines that radiate as spokes from a hub holding the page number, so that the pages are literally turned to be read. The prints are in various mediums, including lithography, etching, and woodcut. The paper was specially made in rounds at the Twinrocker Mill in Indiana. The 40 leaves are housed in a stainless steel canister with a convex mirror on the lid.
Accompanying the portfolio is a record album featuring a rare 1975 recording of Ashbery reading the title poem, liner notes by Helen Vendler across three sides of the gatefold sleeve, a full-scale color reproduction of the sixteenth-century painting by Parmigianino, "Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror", on the front cover, and a photographic portrait of the poet by Richard Avedon on the back cover. Also included is a promotional photographic postcard announcing the publication.
Each print is signed and numbered by the artist, the foreward is signed by John Ashbery, and Andrew Hoyem has signed the colophon.
