Stunning Custom Inlaid Full Leather Bindings
Binding Details: Contemporary custom bindings of full crushed morocco leather with spine treatments of raised bands and gilt ruling, gilt titling, as well as decorative gilt work with green floral onlays. There are quadruple gilt ruled borders to the covers with outward pointing fleurons to the corners as well as an elaborate central green inlaid scrolling floral motif. The front and rear inner boards contain leather and silk doublures that are decorated in gilt ruling. The top page ends are gold gilted.
Collection Details: This is the 48 volume “New Century Edition” of the Charles Dickens’ Works published by Dana Estes and Company, Boston in a limited edition of 1000 sets with this being number 470. Each volume contains a hand colored frontispiece and is profusely illustrated with steel portraits and engravings from the original designs by Hablot Browne (Phiz), George Cruikshank, John Leech and others.
Each book measures approximately 9” x 6.25” and includes a table of contents and list of illustrations with each title containing a preface. All of the illustrations are protected by tissue guards.
The 48 volumes in the “New Century Edition” were numbered based on their order of publication of the first edition, first printing. Included with books is a promotional flyer that lists the books in their order of publication which can be seen in the photo section of this listing.
Condition Report: The bindings are in FINE condition with some very minor surface wear. Internally, the books are very clean with a few small tears to page edges caused by the opening of the uncut pages. There are no bookplates in any of volumes. Overall, this is a beautifully bound limited edition collection of Dickens writings that is in wonderful condition.
