Binding Details: Publisher’s original deluxe leather bindings of three-quarter teal morocco leather over marbled boards with gilt decorated spines featuring titles and floral ornaments between five raised bands. There are double gold ruled decorations to the covers, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, and top gold gilted page ends.
Book Details: The Autograph Edition of The Complete Writings of Nathaniel Hawthorne was published in 1900 with a limitation of 500 sets with this being number 157. The first volume is signed by the author's daughter, Rose Hawthorne Lathrop, who provided the introduction, as well as the publisher on the limitation page. Each of the 22 volumes has a frontispiece illustration that was made especially for this edition that is signed in pencil by the illustrator. The illustrators who participated in this project are among the most critically acclaimed illustrators of the 19th century. In addition to the signed frontispiece illustrations, there are numerous full page tissue guarded illustrations in each of the volume that are a perfect complement to Hawthorne’s writings.

Each volume measures 9” x 6.125” and is printed on antique laid, deckle-edge, hand-made paper. Included in Volume 1 is the signed limitation page as well as a publisher’s preface and an introduction by Rose Hawthorne Lathrop. The collection is very well supplemented with numerous introductory notes, author’s comments, tables of contents, and lists of illustrations.
Condition Report: The bindings are in Near FINE condition with minimal wear. The bindings are tight and strong with secure hinges. The leather remains whole and supple with minor wear to a few of the corner tips and extremities. Internally complete and clean with no foxing. Some of the pages remain unopened with a few tears to a handful of the opened pages that were separated carelessly. There are no signs of previous ownership. Overall, this is a wonderful collection that houses the complete writings of one of the greatest writers of the nineteenth century that are greatly enhanced by the incredible illustrations prepared especially for this publication.
