Binding Details: Custom signed full leather prize binding by Bickers, London bound in burl flame leather boards framed with decorative gilt ruling, raised bands on the spine with six compartments including 2 black leather panels with gilt embossed titling as well as elaborate gilt embellishments. There are marbled endpapers, gilt dentelles, and marbled page ends. The front cover of the book has a gold gild prize stamping from the Lucton School and the inside front cover contains a prefect’s prize plate to G. Brown to replace a book “lost at sea” that was awarded to him in 1905. The Bickers & Sons binder’s stamp appears to the top of the first free endpaper.
Book Details: Originally published in 1907 by George Bell & Son, London, this is the revised single volume edition of John Holland Rose’s critically acclaimed “The Life of Napoleon I” published in 1924 by the same publisher as the first edition. This revised single volume includes new materials from the British Official Records and features 21 illustrations that includes a frontispiece portrait and numerous battle maps. Condition Report: The binding is in Near FINE condition with minor generalized surface wear. Internally, the book is very clean with no foxing. The prize inscription in written and dated in ink on the front inside cover. Overall, this is a very attractive full leather prize signed binding by Bickers that houses John Holland Rose’s critically acclaimed biography of Napoleon.
