History: In 2005, fine press photography book publisher 21ST Editions released Toward Omega. Limited to 60 copies worldwide, the hand-bound collection contains 11 original silver gelatin prints (ten bound and one free-standing silver gelatin print that is suitable for framing). Each print is fully signed by Vincent Serbin with the free standing photograph entitled “Omega Point #54” also signed in full on the rectro. This copy, 4 of 60, was presented to Lance Speer (21ST Editions Contributing Editor and Director of Marketing) upon completion of the project.
Details of the Book and Prints: Omega is the last letter of the Greek alphabet, and has come to signify an “ending” of sorts – a finality. Vincent Serbin has used it here to describe his metaphysical meditations of the nature of time as it relates to our existence and ability to function in the present moment, a confluence of past and future. He writes, “To express this idea, I devised a diptych-like form, which juxtaposes two closely related negatives in a single image; the frame labeled 'event A' is a moment in the near past and 'event B,' a moment in the future. The work that I now create is a complex of text, various distressments, fragmented compositions, texture and color from chemical toners, optical distortions and cellophane tape.” These incredible works of art are like Kinescope stills, caught at the moment of overlapping transition. They invoke the deep and mysterious chasm of complete human self-awareness. John Woods observes in his introduction, “Serbin has illustrated le phenomene humain, the great evolutionary road we traverse from apes to angels, our progress toward the Omega Point, our monumental history.” From the Publisher: “An art publication of 21ST Editions, Toward Omega, is illustrated with original silver gelatin photographs printed and fully signed by Vincent Serbin. These mystical images are accompanied by the metaphysical poetry of prize-winning, contemporary poet Daniel Westover, commissioned specifically for this volume and printed in letterpress on handmade papers. Uniquely bound in a patina copper binding, this 14 x11" volume offers our collectors the rare opportunity to acquire a large body of Vincent Serbin’s work presented in the completely unique surroundings of a finely crafted book.”
The book features a graphically designed patina copper cover that incorporates part of the Greek “Omega” character. It is encased in a cream clothbound case that bears the same character, embossed, with the title stamped in copper. Each of the 10 silver gelatin prints is signed, dated, and numbered on the border. The free-standing silver gelatin print is housed in a folded, letterpress printed presentation folder. Measuring 14” x 11”, the book is also signed by Vincent Serbin, Daniel Westover, John Wood, and the publisher, Stephen Albahari. A Letter of Provenance from Lance Speer is included.
The book and prints are in MINT condition still in the publisher’s original shipping case.
Photographs of book, the free standing silver gelatin print, a stock photograph of the wooden shipping case, and several examples of the silver gelatin prints contained in the book appear in the photo section of the listing.
